Training course in shaving and hairdressing for men and women

VT: Training course in shaving and hairdressing for men and women—Nabd Community Center, Salkhad, Sweida
Due to the increasing demand of the labor market for technicians in the field of shaving and women’s and men’s hairdressing, the team of the Syrian Society for Social Development (SSSD), in cooperation with the High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), conducted two trainings in shaving and hairdressing.

The first training targeted 20 male and female trainees from the local community to learn hairdressing and beauty care. “I badly needed such a course in order to support my family after my husband’s death,” said a woman happily after the end of the course. In fact, most of the women are heads of households.

The second training also targeted 20 trainees, mostly young, from both local and IDP communities to learn men’s grooming. The training has proven rich with explanations, both theoretical and practical. “Having attended this training, I’m now capable of entering the job market, help my family, and fulfill my dream to open a barber’s shop,” said a young man.

Upholstery training course

In view of the increasing need for qualified workers in upholstery, and in light of the market needs assessment, the team of the Syrian Society for Social Development (SSSD), in cooperation with the UNHCR, implemented a training course in this time-honored craft.

The training targeted predominantly female heads of households of various age groups, from both IDP and local communities. The programme included a set of theoretical axes and practical applications on the methods of designing and wadding cushions, pillows, mattresses, corners and other skills that pertain to the craft.

After the course ended, one of the trainees gratefully said: “I felt I’m able now to support my family and children, meet my home’s needs, open an upholstery shop and enter the job market.”

one candle could not light the place

"one candle could not light the place, but all our candles can light all over the place" is the title of an elderly session, which was implemented by the Syrian Society for Social Development at Ward Jury Center in cooperation with the UNHCR.

The session included exchange of opinions, social, cultural and educational ideas for the elderly, where each beneficiary lit a candle symbolizing his idea and conveyed to his colleague ,an expression of sharing each other's ideas, "our ideas to complete each other, even if my opinion differs from others I accept it and do not reject it and we cannot underestimate the importance or idea of anyone"

A Positive Impact

Just like other families that suffered greatly from the crisis, family /B/ consisted of six members_ the parents and their four young children, the eldest being in second grade_ and lived in a modest, damaged house.
The house they lived in lacked many materials necessary to its rehabilitation, for it to become a healthy and suitable place to live in. Unfortunately, the family couldn’t afford such materials due to their dire financial situation.

To make things worse, the mother suffered from nerve inflammation (carpal tunnel) because of all the housework she had to do, such as handwashing her children’s clothes, which was extremely tiresome.

Luckily, the ORV team of the Syrian Society for Social Development in Adra monitored the needs of the poor family, through the Farah Community Center located there. Consequently, they were referred to the In-kind Assistance programme in order to assist them to the greatest extent possible.

Furthermore, the team provided them with a washing machine with two basins to help the mother wash clothes, which would relieve the pressure on her and relieve her pain.

Thus, the joy of the family was great, especially that of the mother, with the help provided by SSSD.
Moreover, family B were intrigued, and wanted to know more about SSSD and the programmes and services it provides, as well as to participate in it and introduce others in need of help.
