Providing Humanitarian Assistance (NFIs, Hygiene Kits), Idlib

In light of the precautionary and preventive measures to limit the spread of COVID-19, and to emphasize the importance of health practices, SSSD’s team distributed 3200 hygiene kits that included soap, washing powder, toilet papers, towels, 10 and 20 liter-bottles, lice shampoos, and diapers, in Hama. Furthermore, NFIs consisting blankets and winter jackets were also distributed.

The project targeted 16,000 people from the areas of Halfaya, Mork, Karna, Al-Asharna, Sheikh Hadid, Bridige, Sqeilbyeh, Souran, and the city of Hama, and from the shelters including Nasseh Alwani, Al-Baridi, Al-Hamoud, Al-Talmathah, Abraj Al-Baroudi, Itarat, Souran, Maardis, and Tibat Al-Imam.

Also, the project targeted 3,200 families, which included newly displaced families, host communities, and original residents of the targeted areas affected by the conflict within Idlib Governorate, Aleppo, and Hama.

During the distribution process, the team took all precautions, while adhering to the hygiene instructions in order to prevent COVID-19 infection.

An Evaluation Visit to the Humanitarian Crossings in Maarat al-Numan - Rural Idlib

In response to the opening of a number of humanitarian crossings in Rural Idlib and Rural Aleppo, and the return of some families, the Syrian Society for Social Development team, accompanied by the Governor of Idlib, Director of Social Affairs and Labor, and government agencies in the governorate, visited the crossing in Maarat al-Numan, Rural Idlib. The aim of the visit was to review the current situation of services, assess the needs of returning families, and try to coordinate with government agencies, as well as other organizations and societies to develop future plans for intervention.

Siraa – Rural Idlib

On the occasion of the International Children's Day, the Syrian Society for Social Development’s team, in cooperation with UNHCR, conducted a campaign at the centers in southern Rural Idlib- Siraa area - within the child protection programme, and lasted for one and a half months. The aim of this campaign was to raise the community’s awareness on the importance of child protection.

The campaign took place because many internally displaced and returnee children were exposed to several dangers that prevented them from obtaining their rights.

Several recreational activities and awareness sessions were carried out for children, parents and community members, on various topics including children’s rights, the importance of shedding light on these rights and securing them for every child without discrimination, working on bringing out and developing children’s hidden talents, and activating children’s roles so that they become active members of society.

The campaign was concluded effectively, and the children expressed their happiness.

Visit to the city of Khan Sheikhoun, Rural Idlib

In response to the return of the population to the city of Khan Sheikhoun, Rural Idlib, and in order to quickly assess the needs and identify the risks faced by returnee families, the SSSD team visited the area and accompanied the families returning to the city. The team also conducted a focus group discussion session with women to identify the basic needs of families and help ensure their protection and stability. In the meantime, they carried out some recreational activities for children (songs, dances, group games) and distributed some presents to them.

Temporary Shelters Need Assessment

The Governorate of Hama, in cooperation with the Directorate of Education, allocated 30 schools adjacent to the Idlib Governorate in the areas of ShatHa, Squelbieh, MHardeh, M‘ardes, Suran and Tibet al-Imam to serve as temporary shelters for people displaced from Idlib.

The SSSD team effectuated visits to 21 schools, evaluated the situation thereat and assessed the needs in terms of capacity and all the necessary equipment to convert the schools into temporary shelters and ensure each family’s safety and privacy. The conditions of electricity installations and water and sanitation facilities (showers, washbasins, latrines, faucets), water installations (water infrastructure, number of water points, tanks, taps, mixers, heaters) and equipment for solid waste management were also thoroughly inspected.

SSSD has joined forces with government agencies, such as community leaders (headmen), municipalities (mayors), directorates (social affairs and labor, education) and other government departments in the governorates, to enable them to respond at all levels and achieve the desired goal.

Returnees to Khan Sheikhoun—Rural Idlib (2)

In response to the recent return of about 300 families to their homes in the town of Khan Sheikhoun, Rural Idlib, the team of the Syrian Society for Social Development visited the city to form an idea about the overall situation of the newly returned families.

The SSSD team carried out a number of recreational and awareness activities for children. In parallel, they met with the people to monitor their basic needs and discuss with them the challenges they are facing after return in absence of most of daily living basic services in terms of health, education, water and sanitation infrastructure—and, last but not least, ERW in the area.

The team also monitored the vulnerabilities of most families and distributed little presents to the children present.

 

 

 


Return Movement to Khan Sheikhoun, Rural Idlib

 

At the invitation of the Governor and the Directorate of Social Affairs and Labor in the Governorate of Idlib, and in response to the people’s return to the city of Khan Sheikhoun / Rural Idlib, and in order to quickly assess the needs and identify the risks to returnee families, the team of the Syrian Society for Social Development (SSSD) visited the city, collected data and assessed the needs.

The SSSD team also carried out some recreational activities for the children there and distributed toys and presents. In addition, they made a careful inspection of the city in order to assess the damage and determine the infrastructure that need restoration/rehabilitation (schools, power and water infrastructure, sewerage network, public clinics…), so these can constitute protection factors for the returning families.
