A Cleaning Campaign

The WASH team of the Syrian Society for Social Development conducted a cleaning campaign, benefiting 1000 individuals in the neighborhood surrounding Community Center.
The cleaning works covered collection and transportation of solid waste. Upon receiving collection and protection tools, the participants enthusiastically worked together in an atmosphere of joy and cooperation. They also distributed brochures, to the inhabitants of the neighborhood, shop owners, and passerby, raising awareness about the importance of keeping the streets clean and dumping trash into its designated containers.

Visit to the municipality of Jaramana

The Syrian Society for Social Development (SSSD) provided the municipality of Jaramana City with solid garbage collection tools, under the umbrella of its WASH program.
SSSD team regularly visited the municipality, continuously meeting with the head of municipality and PIC, and upon conducting area needs assessment the following tools were bought: 240- liter plastic garbage containers, 100 street brooms, and 100 dustpans.
The head of municipality expressed his gratitude to SSSD, receiving the tools on 13 Dec 2018, and emphasized the importance of continuous communication and cooperation to ensure Jaramana is cleaner, more beautiful and urban city.

Waste disposal campaign

WASH team, SSSD, Al-Hameh conducted a cleaning campaign encircling the building of Khaled Ibn Al-Waleed Juvenile Center, Rural Damascus, collecting garbage and transporting it to a landfill.
Personal protection and garbage collection tools were distributed to the participants, who carried out the activities of the campaign in work groups. Later, the team along with some juveniles from the center wall painted tableaus to motivate people to keep the building and area clean.

Teeth care

WASH team, SSSD, Al-Zahera Damascus conducted an event in the Thalassemia Center about teeth care targeting 68 children, Thalassemia patients. The event included: a question-answer contest about teeth care, a dance, games, drawing and painting, and displaying an awareness raising video about teeth care. Finally, a human jaw maquette was presented to the kids to teach them names of teeth and the right way of cleaning teeth. The event was concluded by distributing hospitality food, tooth pastes and brushes.

The Hygiene Train - Al-Hamah

On the occasion of the World Handwashing Day, the SSSD WASH team at al-Hameh, Rural Damascus, carried out an activity on hand hygiene entitled the Hygiene Train, which targeted a primary school. The event included various “stations,” each of which teaches the children the proper way and times of handwashing. “Stations” included puppet theater, drawing and coloring, hygiene cheers, a video clip about hand hygiene, face coloring, dancing with cartoon characters, singing and, to crown it all, practical handwashing. The team formed “trains” of children, each train stopping at a “station,” with all children getting off at all stations. The children and school teachers joyfully welcomed the event, at the end of which a bar of soap and a towel were offered to each of the beneficiaries, totaling 200 people.

The Cleanest Classroom - Al-Hamah

The SSSD WASH team of al-Hameh CC, Rural Damascus, effectuated a visit to a primary school in the district. It was agreed with the administration to organize a Cleanest Classroom competition among the school classrooms. The students would clean up their classrooms and care too about the cleanliness of their clothes and bodies for a whole week. The prize consisted in a recreational activity that included games, dancing and singing with cartoon characters. The winning classroom was also rapturously honored before all students by offering them a “cleanliness cup.” In the end, bars of soap were distributed as a present to 750 students in order to encourage them pay attention to the cleanliness of their school, as well as to their personal hygiene.

"Clean Castle" Campaign

During our quest to raise awareness about public and personal hygiene, and aiming to review the information we shared with beneficiaries during awareness sessions conducted within WASH program in a fun and entertaining way, SSSD SoH – WASH Team implemented a campaign targeting 40 child in Al-Hosn CC, Al-Hosn, Homs, under the title “Clean Castle”.
The campaign consisted of dividing children into four groups to challenge characters disguised as germs, by answering questions about public and personal hygiene, aiming to win the keys for the castle occupied by the King of Dirt. The game ends when the children win all the keys and free the Clean King from his prison, and replace the King of Dirt instead.
All participant children expressed their joy and enthusiasm for this fun activity by implementing all the steps they have learned to keep themselves clean.

Clean it to make it better

In partnership with the Council of the City of Sqailbia and some organizations and institutions in the region, the WASH team at the Syrian Society for Social Development in Hama Governorate carried out a solid waste disposal campaign to raise awareness and to encourage the local community to take care of the cleanliness of the city and not to throw dirt, especially in cultivated land and gardens.
The campaign's title was (clean it to make it better) and targeted 13000 beneficiaries. The campaign was attended by the people of the city and the team. The work was divided into sectors. After the distribution of the protection tools and the necessary materials on the participants, the streets were cleaned and the natural debris (the dry leaves and the broken branches) which caused wounds and prevent traffic to the gardens, in addition to the collection of dirt and insects among them, the waste was removed after the collection to the right place, and the firefighters cleaned the neighborhoods with water, with the spirit of cooperation and joy among everyone.

WASH

The WASH project aims at maintaining the functionality of water and sanitation infrastructure and ensuring safe and dignified access to these facilities through rehabilitation, installation and maintenance work, as well as raising awareness about hygiene issues through hygiene promotion activities and regular cleaning campaigns. It also aims to provide safe potable water for beneficiaries to sustain their lives in a proper manner.

The project also aims at reducing the amount of accumulated waste by training beneficiaries and providing equipment for solid waste management. On the other hand, it seeks to reduce the vulnerability of women and adolescents girls to gender-based violence and to facilitate safe and comfortable access to water and sanitation facilities for people with specific needs by redesigning and maintaining water and sanitation infrastructure.


 

WASH in 2017

In 2017, the Syrian Society for Social Development (SSSD) engaged in the implementation of the WASH Program activities in the various 33 collective shelters (CSs) where it happens to intervene in the governorates of Damascus, Rural Damascus, Aleppo, Homs and Hama.

SSSD has been concerned with solid waste management within those CSs, so it carried out 712 campaigns to collect and remove waste and clean up sewage facilities. It also promoted hygiene and community health awareness by holding 480 awareness sessions for women and children and distributing 5,128 leaflets in the CSs on various health and hygiene topics. Number of beneficiaries: 9,969 direct (living in CSs) and 132,000 indirect beneficiaries (from the local communities living in the proximity of the CSs).

SSSD also carried out the installation, maintenance and rehabilitation of the sewage and water infrastructure within CSs. 18,391 people benefited from these works. It also provided the shelters with 2,466,520 liters of water by water trucking and conducted 404 water safety and potability tests using special testing devices.

Last but not least, SSSD offered in-kind assistance in the form of NFIs, such as cleaning materials and tools to maintain family hygiene standards and cleanliness of CSs. It also paid special attention to PwSN by distributing 193 kg of diapers to help keep their physical cleanliness and safety.
